Practice, Practice, Practice
Aug. 26th, 2014 12:41 amI've been studying Mandarin and it occurs to me just how important familiarity is to reading. I already knew it, because one of the things literacy programs I've assisted in emphasized were sight words. But the Rosetta Stone exercises in Arabic, Russian, and Mandarin take 5+ times to even begin to get what's happening, while Italian, Russian, French, Spanish and German are all comparatively easy.
I will say I started making some headway in recognizing Mandarin characters and at least know how to say 'yes' or 'no.' And thanks to the writing exercise I now know how to get the proper pinyin characters. That's... Actually a fair amount of progress for tonight.
